Further protests are expected to take place after Israel qualified as one of the 26 countries competing in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 final.
Ahead of the second semi-final on Thursday 9 May, thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators took to the streets in Malmö, Sweden, where this year’s contest is being held, to protest against Israel’s participation amid its war on Gaza.
The country is being represented by singer Eden Golan, whose rehearsal performance of her song “Hurricane” was met with boos and shouts of “free Palestine” on Wednesday.
Swedish authorities have ramped up security and are bracing for possible unrest when the final takes place this Saturday.
Other countries to make it through to the final after competing on Thursday include favourites such as Croatia’s Baby Lasagna, Ireland’s Bambie Thug, and Switzerland’s Nemo.
The UK is being represented by pop singer Olly Alexander, who told the BBC on Friday that his odds for winning are “at one per cent”.

The bookies have been updating their odds for the favourites at this year’s song contest.
Maverick singer Baby Lasagna is still the current favourite with his bonkers entry “Rim Tim Tagi Dim”, while Israel’s Eden Golan is second favourite.
BetVictor is offering odds of 11/10 on Baby Lasagna, and 11/5 for Golan and her song “Hurricane”.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian duo Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil are at 16/1, and Ireland’s entry Bambie Thug has odds of 14/1. Italy is another top favourite, with odds of 22/1.
Unfortunately, the UK’s Olly Alexander seems like a long-shot, as odds on his song “Dizzy” are currently at 80/1. But that’s not as bad as Sweden’s delegates Marcus & Martinus, who have a 100/1 shot of clinching a second consecutive win for the host country with “Unforgettable”.
