Spotify is one of the first music streaming platforms to embrace generative AI, and the company is now taking it to the next level with the launch of AI playlists. Currently, in beta, Spotify’s AI playlist feature allows premium users to build a custom playlist using text prompts.

Available for both Android and iOS smartphone users, the feature is limited to markets like the UK, Australia, and will soon be expanded to more markets.

Spotify Premium users can now use text prompts or phrases like “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.” They can also include emojis, colours, names of movie characters, and more to get music recommendations. Based on these inputs, Spotify will recommend music that matches either artist, genre, mood, or all of the above.

Spotify uses inputs from a generative AI model (LLM) to understand users’ intent and offer music that suits their moods and tastes. The company also recently introduced a new AI-powered DJ, which offers custom curation of music, including spoken-word commentary.

Most of the AI-backed features on Spotify are currently limited to premium users, and a recent report from Spotify also hinted that the platform is planning to raise the subscription cost from $1 to $2 in select markets. Not just that, the platform is also implementing more restrictions on its free tier, forcing more people to pay for the premium subscription to get the best possible experience on Spotify.
