The Silver Ferns have lost the opening Constellation Cup netball test to world champions Australia, going down 50-40 in Melbourne.

The first quarter was close with Australia going to the break up 12-10.

But Australia extended the lead in the second quarter building a nine goal lead to be up 29-20 at half time with The Silver Ferns struggling to move the ball through the mid-court due to the oppressive Australian defence.

When they did manage to reach the top of the attack circle New Zealand again struggled to feed shooters Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Amelia Walmsley, often lacking confidence to let their passes go.

A more composed third quarter saw the Silver Ferns find some rhythm, reducing the deficit to six goals to trail 40-34 heading into the final quarter.

However Australia reimposed themselves in the fourth quarter extending the lead to ten goals at the final whistle to run out 50-40 winners.

Game two in the four test series is in Brisbane on Sunday.
