The Highlanders have beaten Moana Pasifika 28-17 in the first-ever Super Rugby Pacific match in Tonga

The Highlanders’ quest to shore up their position in the top eight has begun.

In sodden conditions in Nuku’alofa, a first-half double for fullback Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens lifted the visitors to an 11-point win for their fourth of the season.

The Highlanders fell behind early after Moana Pasifika prop Abraham Pole barged his way over from close range, but Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens’ first try, followed by one to Connor Garden-Bachop on the left wing, saw the visitors edge ahead.

William Havili soon struck back for the hosts, but Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens’ second saw the Highlanders half a 19-17 lead at the break.

Moana Pasifika were held scoreless in the second half, with three penalties from Cameron Millar the only points to be scored when play resumed.
