Hollywood actor Jack Black has surprised thousands at the Foo Fighters' first New Zealand show of 2024 by appearing on stage to sing an AC/DC classic on Saturday night.

Black, who is in Auckland to film the new Minecraft movie along with Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge, was introduced by Foo Fighters' lead singer Dave Grohl after he announced they couldn't leave without playing an AC/DC classic.

However, Grohl told the crowd at Go Media Mt Smart Stadium that he wouldn't sing the song - seconds later, Black, complete with a pounamu around his neck, came bounding on to the stage.

He then sang the 1976 song 'Big Balls' before ending his time on stage doing a forward roll into the crowd.

Earlier in the show, Grohl had been reliving his memories of touring New Zealand with Tenacious D, mentioning how "seismic" their show had been with the band at Auckland's Western Springs in 2011.

Footage of Black's appearance quickly spread on social media, with many fans stunned at his shock performance.

"Foo Fighters bringing out Jack Black to sing an ACDC song about having massive balls was definitely not on my 2024 bingo list," one wrote on social media.

"Omg, Jack Black is here too," another wrote.

"Epicness," another declared on X (formerly known as Twitter.)

"Jack black just sang at the foo fighters concert here in Auckland, what the," another commented.

The Foo Fighters have kicked off a series of three concerts in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, marking their first dates in Aotearoa with new drummer Josh Freese.

It is the Foo Fighters' first headline tour of New Zealand since 2018 after they had announced a series of shows for 2022.

The gigs, which had been previously planned for December 2022, had been cancelled after the death of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.

The band will next play Christchurch on Wednesday, January 24.

The New Zealand leg of their current Australasian tour will end in Wellington at the Sky Stadium on Saturday, January 27.
