Anzac Day trading hours

Australians are commemorating the sacrifice of our servicemen and woman through Anzac Day Dawn Services and marches across the country, and the traditional public holiday.

States and territories have special rules around whether stores can open on Anzac Day.

Most retail stores have reduced trading hours or are closed altogether, but as a general rule of thumb if a shop opens on the Anzac Day public holiday it will be after 1pm. 

Here’s your definitive state-by-state guide to when - and if - your local Bunnings, Kmart, BIG W, Target, Westfield and Best&Less stores are open.

What is open on Anzac Day? 

NSW

In NSW, Anzac Day is a restricted trading day similar to Christmas and Good Friday, with only select businesses allowed to open before 1pm on April 25.

Chemists, supermarkets, petrol stations and fruit and vegetable shops are excluded from the rules and will be allowed to open during the morning, however some shops may choose to remain closed out of respect.

Businesses that hold a hotel or small bar licence will be allowed to open.

Coles, Woolworths and Bunnings will be open from 1pm.

Westfield will open from 1:30pm with reduced trading hours. Stores like Kmart and Big W will open their doors from the same time, while Target will also be open but from 1pm.  

Most Dan Murphy's, BWS and Liquorland stores will begin trading after 1pm.

Most Best&Less stores will be open except Central Bathurst, Dubbo, Merimbula, Mudgee, Nowra, Orange, Ulladulla, Cessnock, Gosford, Gunnedah, Inverell, Raymond Terrace, Tamworth, Taree, Toronto, Salamander Bay, Grafton, Lismore, Moonee Beach and Toormina.

Some small businesses such as bakeries, pet stores, and newsagencies are also exempt but again may choose not to open on Anzac Day.

VICTORIA

Victoria has similar rules to NSW on what is allowed to open on Anzac Day.

Chemists, supermarkets, petrol stations, restaurants, cafes and takeaway outlets are exempt from trading restrictions and will be allowed to open but times may vary.

Cinemas and other entertainment such as concerts or plays are not allowed to operate before 1pm.

Coles, Woolworths, Kmart and Bunnings will be open from 1pm but may close earlier than normal times.

All Target stores are open from 1pm on Anzac Day except for Werribee, while all Best&Less stores will be open except for Corio and Mildura.

Most Dan Murphy's, BWS and Liquorland stores will begin trading after 1pm.

Those looking to do some DIY on the Anzac Day public holiday will find Bunnings stores open (pictured) in NSW, Victoria, Northern Territory, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Bunnings stores in Queensland, however, will remain closed on Anzac Day

QUEENSLAND 

Queensland observes the whole of Anzac Day as a public holiday so the majority of businesses must remain closed.

Exemptions include fruit and vegetable shops, newsagents, chemists, service stations, bakers and butchers, however many of these are also likely to be closed on Anzac Day.

Licensed premises are permitted to be open but are subject to different trading hours, so its best to check what time your local will open.

All Woolworths, Coles, Kmart, Target, Best&Less and Bunnings stores will be closed for the whole of Anzac Day.

Many bottle shops will be closed for the whole day however some may be open, so make sure to check with your local store.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Petrol stations, pharmacies, tobacconists, cafes, restaurants and takeaway food are exempt from closing in South Australia.

Rundle Mall and some regional Woolworths stores will be open, while most Coles will be closed except for Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Berri, Port Augusta, Mount Barker, Adelaide Rundle Place, Whyalla, Mount Gambier, and Victor Harbor.

Most Kmart stores will also be closed except for Mount Gambier, Mount Barker, Port Lincoln, Victor Harbor, Murray Bridge, Port Pirie, Rundle Mall, Whyalla, Berri, Port Augusta and Kadina which will open from 1pm. 

All Bunnings stores will be open from 12pm, while all Target stores will be closed except for Centrepoint which will open 1pm to 6pm. 

All Westfields and Best&Less stores will be closed for the whole of Anzac Day.

Most Kmart (pictured) stores across the country will open at 1pm except for Western Australia and Queensland 

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

West Australian rules state that businesses must be closed for Anzac Day unless they have a certificate that states it is a small or special retail shop.

These shops are considered essential for emergency, convenience or recreational goods and includes shops like pharmacies, newsagents, and arts stores.

The majority of Coles and Woolworths shops will be closed with the exception of some in Orana, Albany and other areas.

Bunnings stores will be open from 12pm, except for Bunbury & Armadale, which will remain closed for the day. 

Most Kmart stores will be closed, except for South Hedland, Karratha, Broome, Albany, Eaton Fair and Busselton which are open from 1pm. 

Westfields, Big W, Target and Best&Less will be closed all day.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

All Woolworths stores will be open on Anzac Day, while Coles stores will open after 12pm with reduced trading hours. 

The vast majority of Dan Murphy's and BWS stores nationwide will be open from either 1pm or 1:15pm, closing between 6 and 7pm. Check your local store times to be sure. 

All Big W stores will be open on the public holiday but will have reduced trading hours, while Kmart stores will open from 1pm and close at 6pm. 

If you're looking to do some DIY on the public holiday, all Bunnings stores will be open from 1pm. 

However, all Best&Less stores will be closed on Anzac day. 

Nearly all BWS (left) stores will be open nationally from either 1pm or 1:15pm, closing between 6 and 7pm, while most Woolworths (right) stores will be open except for stores in Queensland and Western Australia 

TASMANIA

Woolworths and Coles stores will be opening from 12:30pm on Anzac Day.

Most Dan Murphy's and BWS stores ill be open from either 1pm or 1:15pm and closing between 6 and 7pm.  

Big W and Best&Less stores will both be open but will have reduced trading hours, shoppers are advised to check their local stores for opening times. 

Kmart stores will be open from 1pm, with Newtown and Launceston stores opening earlier at 12:30pm, while all Target stores will be open from 1pm to 6pm. 

All Bunnings stores will open from 12:30pm but will have reduced training hours, with stores closing at 6pm.
