"Congenial, and hopeful and promising."

That's how ACT leader David Seymour has today described a meeting with NZ First leader Winston Peters.

The meeting was held yesterday, with Peters visiting the ACT offices in the Parliamentary Library building. It lasted about 15 minutes and had been described by an insider as "fine".

It's since been confirmed the pair met again today for around 10 minutes.

Today, arriving at Parliament, Seymour said he thought he and Peters could "work well together" over the next three years "because that's what we have to do".

"We extended the invitation, Winston came over, and now we've got a lot more meetings and a lot more work over the next three years."

He said he thought the biggest challenges for the incoming government would be from the "outside, not the inside".

"That comes down to trying to manage the government's books, and a lot of the other challenges around social problems that have built up over the last six years, and - I would argue - longer than that."

Seymour said coalition negotiations were "almost a mathematical exercise".

"There's all these different configurations. The one that we end up with will be the one that, first of all gets the best result for a stable political platform that can deliver the policy change voters have asked for, and second of all that suits where each party's up to in its particular journey."

Ranking out of 10 how well coalition talks were going, Seymour said they were "about a seven".

"We're not at the end yet, but a seven's not a bad place to be, in fact it happens to be my favourite number."

Asked if it was a rugby game, if it was past half time, Seymour said it was "definitely in the second half".

"There's no question about that. Definitely a lot of good play in the first half, a bit of reflection over half time, a few oranges, come into the second half and I think a result is getting near.

"I don't think anyone's been given a red card, not even a yellow card. At least the good news is we don't have the upstairs video referee - except for you guys."

1News also caught up with National leader Christopher Luxon this morning. He said negotiations were progressing well and there was "good intention" from all party leaders "to make sure we move through as quickly as we can".

Asked if all three parties had met yet, he said he wasn't "getting into that".
