Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Live Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the Union Council of Ministers, resigned on Wednesday. He tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. “The President accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed," Rashtrapati Bhavan informed.

The development came after the Election Commission of India announced the Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 on Tuesday. The BJP emerged victorious on 240 out of 543 seats, while the Congress secured 99 seats. Despite the Lok Sabha having 543 members, counting was conducted for 542 seats following the uncontested election of BJP's Surat candidate, Mukesh Dalal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead the government for a third consecutive term, supported by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has obtained a majority in the Lok Sabha. Although the BJP fell short of the 272-majority mark, it will rely on NDA allies to form the government. The election results did not deliver the overwhelming victory anticipated by the BJP-led NDA or as indicated by the exit polls.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis requested the BJP high command to relieve him from the responsibility of the government after the BJP secured only nine of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharahstra in the general elections 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Union cabinet here on Tuesday to take stock of the Lok Sabha election results and likely government formation following the BJP-led NDA winning a majority of seats in the house.

The meeting at the prime minister's residence, a day after the results were declared, began at 11.30 am and will be followed by a meeting of the council of ministers, sources said.

The BJP won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi for the third consecutive time, dashing the hopes of the AAP-Congress alliance. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP faced a significant challenge from the INDIA bloc, led by the Samajwadi Party, which won 37 seats. The Samajwadi Party reduced the BJP's count to 35 from 62 seats in 2019.

The Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, which Rahul Gandhi won for the second time in a row, comprises three assembly constituencies each in the tribal district of Wayanad and the Muslim-dominated Malappuram, as well as one in the Kozhikode district, where Christians hold a significant vote base. In his remarks, after most of the results came in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the BJP-led NDA would form its third successive government and that it was the victory of the resolve of Viksit Bharat, of 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas', and of the strong faith of people in India's Constitution.

PM Modi said at the party's central office that it is the first time since 1962 that a government that completed two full terms has gotten a third successive term. He said "new history" has been created after six decades.

PM Modi also said that despite the opposition parties' coming together, their combined number was less than the BJP's tally.

In the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, pollsters had predicted around 285 seats for the NDA. And in reality the NDA bagged 353 seats, of which the BJP got 303 alone. The Opposition’s UPA managed only 93 seats of which the Congress got 52. In the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, the NDA was estimated to win around 257-340 seats. However, the NDA won 336 seats and Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister for the first time.
