A truck that crashed into a wall on State Highway 2 in Pōneke/Wellington, moderately injuring the driver, is causing major traffic delays for drivers heading north on Wednesday.

The road is down to one lane (northbound) just before the Horokiwi Rd exit.

In an update at 2:30pm, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) said a heavy tow had arrived at the crash scene to remove the truck.

"Please continue to expect DELAYS", the agency said.

Traffic queues are backed up all the way to the Ngauranga interchange with SH1.

Emergency services first responded to the crash at about 12:30pm, a police spokesperson said in a statement.

The truck driver was taken to hospital in a moderate condition, the spokesperson added.

Motorists are advised to avoid travelling in the area due to the "significant" delays.

"It is going to take time to clear the area," the spokesperson said.

Due to the delays on SH2, traffic is now building up on SH1 Transmission Gully as drivers clog the alternative SH58 route to Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt Valley, NZTA said at 3pm.

It comes as another truck crashed south of Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash at about 10:30am on SH1 near Bombay. No injuries were reported and traffic is flowing freely again.
