Heavy rain causes delays and diversions at Wellington Airport

Flights were delayed, diverted and cancelled at Wellington Airport because of the heavy rain this afternoon.

A flight to Auckland scheduled to depart at 3.55pm didn’t take off till 7.25, carrying passengers who had missed their connection with international flights.

The 6.05 flight to Auckland didn’t depart till 7.20.

Two flights from Christchurch were diverted, as was a flight from Melbourne.

The rain caused a a discharge of partially treated sewage from the long outfall pipe at the Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. The pipe is 1.8km south off the coast of Lyall Bay.

The sewage was discharged at 3.10pm this afternoon. Wellington Water said the polluted water may appear cloudy or murky.

A Heavy Rain Warning is in place for the Tararua Ranges until 10 pm tonight, and a Heavy Rain Watch has been issued for Wellington.

Waka Kotahi says there is a Road Snowfall Warning for the Remutaka Hill tonight, with the chance of snow falling near the summit.
