MotM Poll: Dortmund win UEFA Champions League 'Group of Death ...

14 Dec 2023

Match Day Six of the UEFA Champion’s League saw Borussia Dortmund Host Paris Saint Germain in a match to decide who would emerge as the winner of Group F. While BVB lost the reverse fixture to the French club, Dortmund had also found themselves atop the European group after a string of wins against Newcastle and AC Milan. A win or a draw would be enough to win the group, but Edin Terzic knew his team’s recent displays of park-the-bus tactics had not resulted positivly, so Dortmund lined up ready to play for the win. The deadlock was broken early in the second half through Karim Adeyemi before Warren Zaire-Emery equalized for PSG minutes later.

This match ended in a draw, and I’m perfectly happy with that. Dortmund managed this draw despite some very questionable officiating, and they won Group F by three points!

Here are our picks for Man of the Match:

Niklas Süle

“Big Fridge” has been upset at his lack of playtime and today he showed why he should be in the Starting XI more frequently. Not only did he win each of his tackles, Niklas was also present in the build-up, dribbling past opposing players on more than one occasion. How about that brilliant, acrobatic save to prevent an PSG from scoring an early goal.

Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels did everything in this match: Eight recoveries, six clearances, five interceptions, and he made eleven passes into the final third. The 34-year-old has been consistently showing top quality this season and continues to be the sentinel of Dortmund’s defense.

Niklas Füllkrug

Füllkrug gets an A for effort since he took an absolute beating in this match. He was chopped down so many times and rarely had the whistle blown in his favor. Füllkrug was dynamic in most attacking plays and instrumental in setting up Adeyemi’s goal.

Karim Adeyemi

While he doesn't yet show the quality we were seeing last season, Karim has displayed an improvement in recent matches. His goal ensured Dortmund finished top of the group. One thing he did well with his speed was pressing PSG’s defense as they would try to retain possession after a failed set piece.
