BUENOS AIRES, 24th May, 2023 (WAM) -- The Argentine national football team has qualified for the second round, or the Round of 16, of the FIFA U20 World Cup, hosted by Argentina.

They achieved qualification after a 3-0 victory over Guatemala in the second stage of the group matches on Wednesday.

Argentina topped Group 1 in the preliminary stage of the tournament, raising their points total to 6 and becoming the first team to advance to the second round. The Guatemalan team suffered their second consecutive defeat, placing them in last place with no points.

The Argentine team sealed their victory with three goals scored by Alejo Felice, Luka Romero and Maximiliano Perez. The match also witnessed the first two red cards of the tournament, with Carlos Santos of Guatemala being sent off in the 58th minute and Tomás Avilés of Argentina in the 82nd minute.

Uzbekistan secured their first point in the group by drawing 2-2 with New Zealand in the other group match, placing them in third, three points behind New Zealand.

In Group 2, the US team defeated Fiji 3-0, and the Ecuadorian team won 2-1 against Slovakia. The victory of the American team places them top of the group with 6 points from two consecutive victories, meaning they are close to qualifying for the second round. Ecuador collected their first 3 points in the group, securing third place with only a difference of one goal behind Slovakia.
