The Frenchman did it in style on only the second day of his Tour de France career.

'Bang in Bologna!' - Vauquelin wins Stage 2 from the breakaway

SOME BIG LOSSES TODAY FOR MANY GC RIDERS

The likes of Primoz Roglic, Carlos Rodriguez, Enric Mas, Pello BIlbao, Simon and Adam Yates, Tom Pidcock, Joao Almeida, Juan Ayuso, Jai Hindley, Aleksandr Vlasov and Felix Gall all came home in the Bardet group 21 seconds down to lose precious time. Things were far worse for Geraint Thomas, who lost over four minutes, and David Gaudu, who shipped a whopping 16 minutes - having already lost a similar chunk yesterday.

It was a somewhat reluctant yellow jersey, it seems, as Tadej Pogacar held off in the final sprint but still ended up with the race lead on a technicality that harked back to his placing in yesterday's opening stage, I think...

1. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates)2. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) +003. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) +004. Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) +005. Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) +06

EVENEPOEL BATTLES BACK! CARAPAZ IN YELLOW?

The Belgian is closing the gap with Richard Carapaz on the home straight - and that's a super impressive ride from Remco Evenepoel. They come together ahead of the finish and then it's the Ecuadorian Carapaz who leads this group over the line ahead of Evenepoel, Vingegaard, Pogacar and Jegat to secure the yellow jersey. At least, that's what the commentators think... let's wait for confirmation on that.

ABRAHAMSEN SECOND, PACHER THIRD

The man in polka dots has gone clear of the chasers and he takes second place with, a few seconds back, Quentin Pacher of Groupama-FDJ just pipping Cristian Rodriguez of Arkea for third.

VICTORY FOR VAUQUELIN IN STAGE 2 IN BOLOGNA

Arkea B&B Hotels finally have their first win on the Tour de France as 23-year-old Kevin Vauquelin crosses the line for a breakthrough victory on the second day of his first Tour de France. What a ride from the Frenchman.

What a start to the Tour for the host nation in Italy with two wins from two...

2KM TO GO: ARKEA BEGIN TO CELEBRATE

Cristian Rodriguez, who was in the break with team-mate Vauquelin, is already smiling at the cameras and pumping his fist. He knows that the win is in the bag. We're hearing that Evenepoel is around 15 seconds behind Pogacar and Vingegaard but that hasn't been confirmed yet. We'll have to wait for the finish...

5KM TO GO: THE BIG TWO GOING BIG GUNS ON DESCENT

We're so lucky to be able to witness such a great rivalry between Pogacar and Vingegaard - they really are a cut above the rest. The Dane isn't riding like someone who missed three months after a high-speed crash on a descent - this is a fearless display from them both. It's hard to know what's happening behind - we still don't know where the likes of Roglic and Evenepoel are.

8KM TO GO: CHASE GROUP FORMS

Abrahamsen has been caught by five others in pursuit of Vauquelin - but one of those riders is the Frenchman's Arkea team-mate Rodriguez, so good luck with that one. Behind, Pog and Ving are within three minutes of the front and have almost 40 seconds on the yellow jersey group.

16:08

10KM TO GO: VINGEGAARD PUSHING ON DESCENT

It's the Dane who comes ahead on the first descent to the foot of the secondary pitch. Both he and Pogacar clearly want the yellow jersey today - and they've already opened up a gap of 25 seconds over the other GC favourites. On the front, Vauquelin rides towards victory with 48 seconds in his back pocket over Abrahamsen.

11KM TO GO: POGACAR ATTACKS!

The Slovenian now has a dig - and the only rider who can go with him is Jonas Vingegaard. Well, well, well... it's as we were, ladies and gentleman. Despite all his injury troubles, the Danish defending champion clearly still has the legs to go shoulder-to-shoulder with the man of the moment, Pogacar.

16:05

12KM TO GO: WHERE'S ROGLIC?

It's difficult to pick out Primoz Roglic on the front of the main pack... Romain Bardet has been dropped and will lose the yellow jersey today, ditto Pidcock and Bernal. Bad day for Ineos Grenadiers. Yes, Roglic isn't there and team-mate Vlasov has to drop back to help him out.

16:04

12.5KM TO GO: VAUQUELIN OVER THE TOP

The lone leader crests the summit and he now has 45 seconds on his pursuer, Abrahamsen. It's the Frenchman's to lose.

13KM TO GO: VINGEGAARD AND POGACAR ON THE FRONT

And now Adam Yates takes it up for his leader, Pogacar. Before that, it was all Visma. Geraint Thomas is one of the big names to be distanced... But will anyone attack?

16:03

13.5KM TO GO: VAUQUELIN EXTENDING LEAD

It looked like Abrahamsen was going to put up a spirited comeback but the Norwegian is now dropping back as the Arkea B&B Hotels rider edged further ahead on this otherworldly climb that rises above Bologna.

14KM TO GO: VAUQUELIN GOES CLEAR

The Frenchman rides clear of Abrahamsen and Oliveira in his pursuit of glory. What a story this would be - a second successive win for the host nation in Italy.
