Former Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings dies in Netherlands

Former Fonterra chief executive Theo Spierings has died after a brief illness.

His family said Spierings’ death, in the Netherlands on Saturday, was unexpected.

Spierings had more than 30 years’ experience in the dairy industry, including as chief executive of the Fonterra, acting chief executive of the Dutch Royal Friesland Foods dairy co-operative, and chair of the Global Dairy Platform. 

Most recently he was co-founder and chair of The Purpose Factory, a Netherlands-based foundation and consultancy focused on global sustainable development goals and business transformation and innovation.

A Fonterra spokesperson said the co-op was are saddened to learn that Spierings has passed away. “Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”

His family has requested privacy, but say they appreciate the outpouring of love and support from around the world.

A private memorial service will be held in the Netherlands.
