The Diplomat is back on Netflix for season 2 (all six episodes dropped on 31st October 2024), as US ambassador Kate Wyler heads to London to handle the fallout from a deadly explosion. When was The Diplomat season 3 confirmed?

Netflix confirmed in early October 2024, before season 2 was even released, that The Diplomat season 3 was happening. In fact, production is already well underway in both London and New York.

The series creator Debora Cahn shared a statement with Variety which said, "After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY. Best of both worlds — filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.”

She also shared it was her decision to cut season two down to only six episodes in order to get it out quickly, leaving fans to cross their fingers that season three might dig a bit deeper. Debora told TVLine, "It was my decision [to trim the episodes. Netflix] was not happy. They wanted the full eight...I was really tired. It was a time thing. It felt like there wasn’t enough time to turn around eight of them. It was a lot to do in what appeared to be a short period of time."

While the majority of details are under wraps, the show's creator did tell Netflix’s Tudum, “Season 3 flips the chessboard. In season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want." Intriguing.

The Diplomat season 3 release date speculation

Season 1 of The Diplomat debuted in April 2023, while season 2 dropped 18 months later in October 2024. Seeing as season 3 went into production before season 2 came out - and it's likely the second season was delayed by the writer's and actor's strike of summer 2024, we're imagining season 3 will be released in mid- to late-2025. But this is just pure speculation for now!
