There has been huge drama in the Premier League with Spurs star Cristian Romero controversially sent off in a wild London derby between Ange Postecolglou’s Spurs and Chelsea.

Tottenham made a fast start when Dejan Kulusevski opened the scoring in the fourth minute thanks to a deflected shot which completely wrong-footed Chelsea goalie Édouard Mendy.

Heung-Min Son thought he doubled Tottenham’s advantage less than 10 minutes later, but he timed his run too early and was adjudged offside by VAR.

Chelsea themselves had a goal ruled out when Raheem Sterling was ruled to have handled the ball in the lead up to his goal.

It was then, however, that the real drama erupted. Chelsea thought they had equalised thanks to a stunning strike from Caicedo only for VAR to rule Nicholas Jackson had impeded Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s view from an offside position.

In the lead up to the strike, however, Romero made a lunging play at the ball before following through into the shin of Enzo Fernande.

It was referred to referee Michael Oliver who showed Romero red and awarded the penalty which was duly converted to level the scores at 1-1.

Manchester United legend and Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville slammed Romero for a “mad challenge” but questioned whether he should have been sent from the field.

He doesn’t need to follow through like that and put his studs into Fernandez’s shin,” he said on Sky Sports’ coverage.

“For me, it’s a penalty. “It’s not a natural follow through.

“It’s definitely a penalty but for me, it’s whether it is a red.”

While there was fierce debate over whether the challenge warranted a send off, Premier League figures were quick to point out Romero’s awful disciplinary record.
