An early morning fire has destroyed the iconic Sawtooth building in Wellington’s Shelly Bay.
Fire and Emergency warned residents in the immediate area a to keep their windows and doors closed because of the risk of asbestos in the air.
The fire is being investigated.
The building was slated for demolition as part of a $500 million redevelopment of the former defence base, which was bought by Taranaki Whanui claimants as part of their treaty settlement and then on-sold to developer Ian Cassels.
Meanwhile, Stuff reports Shelly Bay Taikuru Ltd, the company that now owns the land, has asked for permission to appeal against the Māori Land Court’s provisional decision to hear a case bought by some Taranaki Whanui members against the sale.
It says the proper place for the Mau Whenua group to to challenge the sale was the High Court, as the Maori Land Court does not have jurisdiction over general land.
