The Chief Medical Officer for Counties Manukau says Iwi Māori Partnership Boards will play a crucial role as Te Whatu Ora transitions towards better connecting Health New Zealand with the community.

On Tuesday, Health Minister Shane Reti told Waatea Digital that the boards have provided valuable local data from Māori communities on health needs, including rheumatic fever, dental care, cardiovascular issues, and respiratory conditions, to help Te Whatu Ora improve Māori health outcomes.

Andrew Connolly says that while he has no direct involvement with the boards, they will be instrumental in bridging the gap between hospitals and the community.

“I see huge opportunity, like a lot of things in health, I think we’re still in this period of change, and it’s hard to see how it all fits together at the moment, but huge opportunity and very important opportunities to grab,” says Connolly.

Andrew Connolly says he suspects they may be underfunded, however that issue is across the board in health.
