Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins says the rise of the Toitū Te Tiriti protest is very understandable, given what the Government has done to Māori.
Today, the hīkoi will cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge from Hāto Pētera School marae, Te Kāmaka, in Northcote, and split into two groups, heading to Takaparawhau in Ōrākei and Ihumātao in Māngere.
Hipkins says this protest embodies the frustration Māori feel about being marginalized.
“Whether it’s things like stopping teachers getting trained to speak in te reo Māori within the classroom, even though that course was very popular and was evaluated as a really high-quality course – with stopping government departments using te reo Māori in their names – it’s scrapping a by Māori for Māori approach to healthcare in the scraping of Te Aka Whai Ora,” says Hipkins
Tomorrow, the bill will have its first reading, and the protest is expected to arrive in Wellington next Monday.
