WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Prairie View broke ground on its Sanctuary on the Prairie project in Newton. On Tuesday, the project is designed to provide crisis stabilization services for individuals needing immediate support and care, offering an alternative to hospitalization.

The Sanctuary on the Prairie project will feature independent units for individuals requiring crisis stabilization services. The units allow for a safe environment for up to 90 days while receiving care at Prairie View. This project offers an alternative to congregate living situations, especially for those without a stable home environment.

“The goal of our project here is to provide housing for individuals while working with them that have mental illness to be able to create stability,” said Prarie View President & CEO Marcy Johnson.

In addition, Prairie View will provide support for daily living tasks and skills, such as working in a community garden, doing laundry, and meal preparation. Those receiving treatment will work to get jobs and secure housing to prevent a recurring cycle of crises.
