Parts of Auckland and the Coromandel will be waking up still in the dark on Monday morning with widespread power outages across parts of the North Island.

Vector's online outage map shows areas in Auckland's north, south, and northwest experiencing unplanned power cuts, but with restoration work currently underway across the region.

Up north, there are outages in Wellsford, Te Hana, Te Arai and up to the Northland border.

In the northwest, affected areas include from Muriwai to Kumeū, as well as Waimauku, Huapai and up north of Woodhill.

The affected areas in the North Shore include Long Bay, Torbay, Browns Bay, Rothesay Bay, Murrays Bay, Mairangi Bay and parts of Campbells Bay, as well as parts of Albany, Rosedale, Pinehill, Northcross and Fairview Heights. The power in most of these areas has since been restored.

Down south, parts of Manurewa were experiencing unplanned outages, including Conifer Grove, but power here has been restored.

Meanwhile, new outages also have emerged in Mahurangi up to Algies Bay, as well as parts of Kawau Island.

There are currently no weather warnings or watches in place for Auckland, but MetService has forecast a wet day.

"A few showers, possibly heavy and thundery, clearing late morning with fine breaks increasing. Showers returning for Great Barrier Island this evening. Northerlies, turning westerly late morning and dying out this afternoon," the weather agency predicts.

Newshub has asked Vector for more information.

Meanwhile, Powerco is also reporting thousands of outages across the network.

Just before 9am, its outage map showed the Coromandel riddled with unplanned power cuts, including 5725 in Whangamatā - 3561 of which are in Onemana.

There are also unplanned outages in Waihi, Tauranga and Te Puke.

This is a developing story - more to come.
