The Gary Community School Corp. held an event earlier this week for students of all ages which promoted reading, with a holiday twist.
Gary schools held its Roaring for Reading: Polar Express event over two days at West Side Leadership Academy. It featured story time, a live DJ, a photobooth, book giveaways, baked cookies and hot cocoa, as well as a polar express train for children to ride on.
"We always want to make a huge impression when it comes to literacy because it is the foundation for all other learning," said Esther Goodes, the district's chief of schools.
Goodes further stated they chose "The Polar Express" film for the event's theme given its familiarity with students.
"We ran with [the] theme and created an engaging, fun and unforgettable experience for the children and our community," Goodes said.

Box office gross figures were adjusted for inflation. To be considered, movies needed to be in theaters the same weekend as Christmas or the weekend after when the holiday fell on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
