Mullagh’s Britney Arendse has finished fourth in the Paris Paralympics this evening in the up to 79kg class.

The twenty-six-year-old did her home town and the entire county proud as she smashed two lifetime bests on the Paralympic powerlifting stage.

Delight was evident on her face as she lifted her lifetime best of 133kg, lifting three clear rounds.

On her first attempt she lifted 129kg with a lifetime best of 131kg on her second attempt. She smashed this only minutes later creating a new lifetime best of 133kg on her third and final attempt.

Speaking to the media in Paris afterwards, a thrilled Britney cried “happy tears.”

“To get three PB’s over here, it’s what I needed,” she said.

Speaking to The Anglo-Celt before the competition took place she had said she would consider herself “lucky” to get a personal best.

Han Miaoyu from China placed first in the competition, lifting a world record of 154kg.

Bose Omolayo from Nigeria placed second, while Safaa Hassan from Egypt placed third.

Britney is set to return to Ireland on Monday, September 9. More from the Mullagh star in next week’s newspaper.
