Prime Minister James Marape has been invited by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to attend the National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Final tonight in Sydney, between the Melbourne Storm and the Penrith Panthers.
The invitation comes at a pivotal moment as Papua New Guinea is bidding for a place in the NRL competition in 2028, with the enthusiastic support of the Australian government.
Prime Minister Marape is set to travel to Sydney over the weekend and return to the country on Monday.
The Prime Minister’s visit to the NRL Grand Final symbolises not only the strength of the Australia PNG relationship but also the hope and aspirations of a nation seeking unity through sport.
Speaking ahead of his trip, Prime Minister Marape expressed optimism about Papua NewGuinea’s bid to join the NRL, emphasising that it will not be influenced by government agendas but will focus on its potential to inspire and unite the country.
“Our bid to have a PNG team in the NRL competition is seen as a ‘unifying strategy’ for thecountry amidst so many divisive forces. A PNG team competing in the NRL would do so much to bring us together as ‘one country, one nation, one people’,” said Prime Minister Marape.
He also revealed plans to engage major companies in Papua New Guinea to back the team, while the Government continues to make significant improvements to Port Moresby in anticipation of the NRL bid’s success.
The Prime Minister praised the Australian government’s support, recognising the immensepopularity of rugby league in PNG, especially among the youth and women.
He also highlighted the strong foundation laid by the PNG Hunters, who have gained nationwide support while competing in Queensland’s second-tier rugby league.
“Imagine the impact on PNG if we have a team in the NRL competition. For me, this is not just about rugby—it’s about a ‘unifying strategy’ as we look beyond our 50th anniversary as a nation in 2025,” Prime Minister Marape said.
Prime Minister Marape acknowledged Australia’s enduring partnership with Papua New Guinea since its independence, stating, “When we floated the idea of having a PNG team in the NRL, Australia didn’t hesitate to offer substantial financial support. I sincerely thank them from the bottom of my heart.”
He further emphasised the cultural and social significance of rugby league in PNG, drawingparallels with Nelson Mandela’s use of rugby union as a unifying force in South Africa during the fight against apartheid.
“Rugby league has the power to bring people together. We already have world-class players in the NRL, and our country is full of untapped potential. I’m confident that Papua New Guinea has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
“Beyond the thrill of sports, this moment represents a significant economic boost for Papua New Guinea. With international games being played on our soil and players living among us, the opportunities for growth are immense.
“The government is fully committed to transforming Port Moresby into a safer, more vibrant city, working hand-in-hand with National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop.
“This event will be bigger than anything we’ve seen with the PNG Hunters, and it will showcase our nation on the global stage through worldwide broadcasts.Together, we’re seizing this chance to elevate Port Moresby to new heights, driving progress and pride for all of PNG,” said Marape.
