Oprah Winfrey wants Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to do whatever is going to make them the happiest.

The TV legend made an appearance on CBS Mornings alongside her longtime close friend Gayle King on Thursday, during which King asked her opinion on whether or not the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should attend King Charles's coronation on May 6 after everything they've gone through. “It's been reported that Harry and Meghan have received an invitation to the coronation,” King began. “Do you think they should go? Do you think they should not go? Is it something you'd like to comment on?” Oprah replied to her friend, “I think they should do what they feel is best for them and for their family. That's what I think. That's what the bottom line — it comes down to: What do you feel like is the best thing for you?” However, she added with a smile, “They haven't asked me my opinion.”

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan previously told The Sunday Times in a statement earlier this month, “I can confirm The Duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty's office regarding the coronation. An immediate decision on whether The Duke and Duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time.”

Oprah has been a loyal friend and neighbor to the royal couple, following their relocation to Montecito, California in 2020. After Harry and Meghan stepped down from their positions as senior royals, the former talk show host told TMZ, “I support them 1,000 percent. You know why I support them? I support them because I believe, when you have thought about this as long as they have—and even in the Queen's statement [she] says, ‘This has been going on for months,’ these discussions have been going on for months—and when Harry said in that charity statement the other day [that] he had to make the decision to move forward in peace with his new family, who doesn't feel what that takes to make that decision to give up everything you've known your whole life to say I'm going to choose this new life or what I believe to be the truest vision for myself?”

And in March 2021, the Duke and Duchess sat down for an explosive televised interview with Oprah, during which Meghan outlined the lack of support she felt as the newest member of the royal family, her thoughts of self-harm, how their son Archie had been denied a royal title, and that there were “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born.”

But even despite the rift that has formed between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family, sources close to the new king tell Vanity Fair that he wants his youngest son to be there on such a momentous day as his coronation. “Charles is a forgiving person by nature, and he wants to move on,” they said. “Whatever has been said and done, Harry is still his son and he loves him. He also cannot imagine being crowned, the most important moment of his life, without both his sons witnessing the moment.”
