Man United attack that has scored six goals in 98 minutes can finally ...

Man United

After scoring three goals in their first four games of the season, Manchester United have burst into life this week. Ten goals without reply have been plundered against Southampton and Barnsley and while tougher tests lie ahead, the gluttony has given confidence to the forward ranks.

Wondering where the goals were going to come from this season felt a legitimate question after the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool before the international break but those concerns have been eased by the rampant nature of United's attacking this week. You can only beat what is in front of you and Ten Hag's team have done that with style.

Forthcoming fixtures against Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Aston Villa in the Premier League will provide a sterner test but suddenly Ten Hag's dilemma is how to make the most of the in-form attackers suddenly desperate to get their chance.

Alejandro Garnacho has started only twice this season but now has four goals and three assists and is averaging 2.2 goal contributions per 90 minutes. He has been effective off the bench this season but it is beginning to feel like the 20-year-old is going to another level this term. He has to be unleashed from the start at Selhurst Park.

The same is true of Marcus Rashford, scorer of three of those goals this week and suddenly playing with a swagger last seen in his 30-goal campaign in 2022/23. Leaving him out now would be a blow to his confidence and Ten Hag is aware it would hurt the 26-year-old. He went out of his way to talk him up at Southampton and his record of starting every game this season will continue.

Amad was given a rest against Barnsley but came on to try and get involved in the fun late on. While Antony scored against the League One outfit, it is Amad who has been far and away the best right-winger this season. His neat dribbling, clever use of the ball and consistent goal threat make him almost undroppable for the league assignments.

The question is who misses out and for now, the answer might be £36.5m forward Joshua Zirkzee. The summer signing from Bologna has had a positive start to life at Old Trafford but he isn't in the zone to the extent that Amad, Garnacho and Rashford are. He scored off the bench against Fulham and Zirkzee can try and play a similar role now.

Rasford's double against Barnsley came as a No.9 and he can continue in that role, with Garnacho on the left and Amad on the right. Rashford prefers to play off the left but Ruud van Nistelrooy can help him become more of a threat as a striker and he took both goals brilliantly on Tuesday.

If Ten Hag does opt for a front three of Amad, Rashford and Garnacho then it will be the first time they have ever started a game together for United. They've not even been on the pitch together yet this season.

They do have history from last term, however. They combined during a game on four occasions, playing 98 minutes that produced six goals for United. An impressive record.

It should be said that United were generally chasing those games. First came 36 minutes at Nottingham Forest in the final game of 2023, when Amad came on for Antony and Rashford scored, although it wasn't enough to stop the hosts winning 2-1.

Next there were 10 minutes against Fulham at Old Trafford when Amad replaced Kobbie Mainoo. United were 1-0 down and although Harry Maguire equalised they lost the game to an even later Alex Iwobi goal.

Back at Forest in the FA Cup fifth round, Amad came on alongside Rashford and Garnacho for the final 17 minutes and a goalless draw became a 1-0 win thanks to Casemiro's strike. That set up a quarter-final against Liverpool and the most thrilling contribution.

As United desperately chased that game, Amad came on for Victor Lindelof with five minutes to go. Antony found an equaliser and in extra-time Rashord and Amad scored to secure a thrilling 4-3 win. That remains the last time the trio shared a pitch together.

With the form they are in you feel like that must change this weekend. It would perhaps be unfair on Zirkzee but right now Amad, Rashford and Garnacho look capable of tormenting every defence they come up against.
