The numbers didn't line up for anyone last night, meaning Lotto's Powerball has rolled over to a staggering $50 million.

Due to Lotto New Zealand's game rules, the jackpot must be won this weekend.

If no single ticket wins Powerball First Division, the prize poll filters down to the next highest division winner.

Lotto NZ is yet to reveal the exact number of tickets sold for Wednesday's draw, but Saturday's "must-win" game will likely drive demand to record levels.

"We know this is an exciting time for Kiwis all around the country and we definitely see more people join the game for a Must Be Won draw," Lotto NZ head of corporate communications, Lucy Fullarton, said.

Fullarton urged New Zealanders to play responsibly and to avoid leaving buying a ticket to the last minute.

"We know stores will be busy from mid-afternoon on Saturday," Fullarton said. "We also expect the last hour before sales close at 7:30pm to be particularly busy online. Our best advice for anyone wanting to grab a ticket is to get in early and avoid those busy times."

The last time Lotto Powerball reached $50m was in 2020, when it hit the milestone twice.

In February 2020, two players split the prize pool, while in August, 10 lucky Kiwis split the money and took home $5m each.

The biggest winning by a single ticket was $44m in November 2016.
