Laurel residents celebrate 1st night of 'Mistletoe at Mason Park'
LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Nationwide, Sunday was National Christmas Light Day.
In Laurel, the date also marked the first day of “Mistletoe at Mason Park.”
The lights were officially plugged in at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Organizers said Sunday marked the largest Christmas light display since 2015.
“We have added a lot of arches throughout the park, so it encourages you to walk through the park and see all the lights,” said Amanda Mathews, Mistletoe at Mason Park coordinator. “You certainly can drive around, but I think our new additions are going to encourage people to get into the park.”
The big event included pictures with Santa, train rides, face painting and food vendors.
“My favorite part? Probably everything,” said Caleb Rodriguez, of Laurel.
The lights at Mason Park will turn on every night from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Jan. 4. There is no entry fee.
The Committee to Light Mason Park said it took dozens of volunteers and Mississippi Power to make the display possible.
“I love it,” said Olivia Davis, of Laurel. " I want to bring my little kids one day.”
Mathews says all proceeds from Misletoe at Mason Park go back into the committee to keep this event going.
