Laurel Little Theatre fundraiser underway for renovations
LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Plans are underway to revitalize the Laurel Little Theatre to make for a more enjoyable experience for acts and performances.
The building was constructed in 1927 and then transformed into the theatre in the early 1970’s.
“Laurel had many theaters during the time of the Arabian and the Strand of the movie theaters in Laurel and this one was the most recently closed, so, this is the area that they selected for the Laurel Little Theatre,” said Board President Christy Liverett.
Liverett said a 2008 fundraiser started called” Raise the Roof Capital Campaign.”
It was a plan to build on a space on the south side of the building where the old Pinehurst Hotel once stood.
“The hotel shared a wall with the theatre, and it had a door that hotel patrons could enter the theatre from the side,” Liverett said.
Liverett said other areas of the building also need attention like storage, dressing rooms and bathrooms.
“It’s the original plumbing from when the building was built, so we definitely want to accommodate that,” she said.
The theatre has decided to bring the fundraiser back to the forefront to keep acts on the stage and visitors in the seats.
“We could bring in concerts, we could bring in the ballet, we could bring in drum circles, we could bring in all sorts of cultural acts and performances to this stage, so that this theatre can be enjoyed by so many more people than just right here in Laurel,” said Liverett.
The Laurel Little Theatre is at 25 percent of its financial goal for the project.
