New Zealand is in mourning following the passing of the Maori King Tuheitia last Friday.

Tens of thousands are expected to visit the Turangawaewae Marae in Waikato, where the late Kiingi Tuheitia lies in state. His passing has caught many by surprise as he had only recently celebrated the 18 year anniversary of his coronation.

"We're in this time at the moment in our country, where we need indigenous leadership...to look to someone who is hopeful and has a beautiful vision," said Green MP Kahurangi Carter.

"We need a sovereign who can inspire hope and vision in our people."
