Police have named the suspect in a fatal stabbing on an Auckland bus as Kael Leona.

Police say Leona is known to them, but hasn't been involved in violent crime before. They have described the bus attack as "random" and do not believe there was an altercation beforehand.

Leona's family is assisting police.
