Melbourne Storm legend Tawera Nikau says Jahrome Hughes has been a standout performer this year.
The Storm and Kiwis halfback last night won the Dally M Award as best player in the NRL, edging out Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco by one point.
Nikau says the quietly-spoken Hughes has flourished in Melbourne.
“And very similar to a former player, Cooper Cronk, who was not a halfback when he went to Melbourne, but once again, under the coaching ability of Craig Bellamy and the environment that they created became one of the best halfbacks to ever play the game,” he says.
During the ceremony, Hughes’ Kiwi and Storm teammates Will Warbrick, Eli Katoa, and Joseph Tapine performed an impromptu Ka Mate haka to honour him.
