A spokesperson for the third national protest hikoi to Parliament in 49 years says the difference with this one is that it’s not just about Māori rights.
A spokesperson for the third national protest hikoi to Parliament in 49 years says the difference with this one is that it’s not just about Māori rights.
In 1975, Dame Whina Cooper led the “Not One Acre More” march, while in 2004, Hone Harawira led the Foreshore and Seabed hikoi—and now, he says, a “sunrise” generation of Māori has taken the reins.
A hikoi left Te Rerenga Wairua in the north early yesterday and is expected to be in Tāmaki Makaurau today.
Māori Video Journalist Harata Brown says hikoi spokesperson Eru Kapa-Kingi says while the goal is to protest the Treaty Principles Bill, it’s not solely about that.
“Rather, its a hikoi to ignite the flames within both tangata whenua and tangata tiriti – to say that Tiriti o Waitangi is entrenched in our nationhood, not just for Māori but also for tangata tiriti as well,” say Brown.
Harata Brown says the hikoi aims to reach Parliament in nine days, where they will protest peacefully.
