BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - June’s Hometown Hero of the Month is brought to you by Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers.

Susan Blancett is a medical assistant for the Oncology Department at Med Center Health. Patients say she has a way of making them feel at ease, even to the point where they forget why they are there.

“To be able to just sit down with somebody and just listen to them just vent, I mean, like anybody who’s got a big heart to do this job,” Blancett said.

Hughes & Coleman donated $500 on her behalf to the Med Center Health Foundation. She said the money will help pay for gas cards, co-pays, medications that the patients are unable to afford at their pharmacies, and helping patients pay utility bills and rent.

“It’s very, very important that we, as a team, are there for them and to show them that even though they have this diagnosis of cancer, they’re not alone,” she said.

It’s not only the patients that feel she is outstanding. Those that work with Blancett also recognize and admire her skills.

“I would say it’s an understatement to call the work she does exceptional,” Medical Oncologist Dr. Diego Cabrera said. “I believe she is a pivotal member of this department, and she shows that day in, day out.”

Both engaging and comforting, Blancett is genuinely interested in the patients, their thoughts, and the care they are receiving.

“Just being there with the patients, even though they have that horrible diagnosis, they start living, you start seeing them, like, doing things, their bucket list, you know,” she said. “If they’re out there and they’re enjoying life, they’re taking every single day, all of it is just rewarding. Even with the hardest part of the job.”

Blancett finds happiness and joy in her interactions with others, helping them through their illness.

“There’s no greater joy than helping take care of people, getting that closeness with patients, whether it be a child or adult.”

From her experience with patients, she reminds people to savor every moment they have.

“Live life and [don’t] take anything for granted,” she said. “Give that love to your family, to your friends.”
