Helen Worth, who has starred as Coronation Street's Gail Rodwell (formerly Platt) for 50 years, is leaving the show at the end of the year.

Worth joined the show in 1974 and will depart after what ITV has described as a "major storyline" for the Platt family.

"This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world," she said.

Helen Worth, known to millions as Gail Platt, is calling time on her long-running career.

"I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding."

Among the story lines Gail was involved in was when her 13-year-old daughter Sarah became pregnant. It prompted outrage among some when it screened.

Worth has appeared on the show over 4450 times — the record is held by William Roache, who made 4773 appearances as Ken Barlow.
