The chair of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority says whānau need to treat our maunga with respect during tonight’s Guy Fawkes celebrations.
The Tūpuna Maunga Authority was established under the Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau Collective Redress Act 2014 to manage the fourteen ancestral maunga in Auckland.
Last week, a large grass fire occurred on Maungarei Mount Wellington, with six fire trucks and approximately 24 firefighters dispatched to control the blaze.
Paul Majurey, a representative of the Marutūāhu iwi from East Auckland, says most firework-related fires are caused by individuals bringing fireworks onto the maunga outside the Guy Fawkes purchasing period. Public access to the maunga has been restricted since 2019.
“Whether you call it intentional or it’s definitely reckless, we just have a few numbers of idiots who think it’s their ruha to go up to these iconic taonga tuku iho to have their fun regardless of the damage that they caused,” says Majurey.
