Powerchair football will be among the sports demonstrated at a Waikato disability sports day on Saturday July 20, 2024.
The ‘Sports on Courts’ day will be held at The Peak and co-presented by Parafed Waikato.
Powerchair football is a competitive team sport for disabled people who use power wheelchairs.
The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court. Two teams of four players use powerchairs equipped with footguards to attack, defend, and spin-kick a 13-inch (330 mm) football in an attempt to score goals.
The powerchair football will be held from 12.30pm – 4pm. The planned format is a have-a-go session — all ages welcome — followed by a competitive game.
Parafed Waikato’s Cathy Wooller said: “This is an opportunity to come along and find out more about sports options for disabilities, as well as watch a competitive game involving players from around the country.”
The event is open to everyone, and lunch will be provided.
As well as Powerchair Football, six other adaptive sports will be on offer: wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, netball, boccia, pickleball and sitting volleyball, with a court dedicated to a soft play obstacle course for kids.
