Chesterfield's firework display shelved due to storm

People have been urged not to put on their own displays at home

A major firework display due to take place in Chesterfield has been cancelled due to wet conditions.

The borough council said the ground at Stand Road Park remained waterlogged following Storm Babet, with more heavy rain expected.

As a result, the event on Friday has been shelved for safety reasons.

The authority urged people to attend alternative displays in and around town rather than organising their own at home.

Chesterfield was one of the worst hit parts of the country when Storm Babet arrived on 20 October, with dozens of homes evacuated and a woman in her 80s dying.

Kate Sarvent, from the council, said: "We have been closely monitoring the situation over the last few days, but regrettably we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel this year's fireworks display.

"We know this will come as a disappointment to many families and children who would have been looking forward to attending this popular event - but safety must be our number one priority.

"We know there are other firework displays planned at other Chesterfield venues and in neighbouring areas and we'd encourage the borough's residents to support these events rather than hosting their own fireworks displays at home."
