Families gathered in Rotary Park this Father’s Day to plant trees in commemoration of loved ones, fathers and anyone or anything else special in their lives.

The Dunedin Rotary Club, Trees for Life and Keep Dunedin Beautiful all worked together on the beautification project.

Fifty native trees, bought through Trees for Families, were planted in the park yesterday.

Craig Radford and his 4-year-old granddaughter Olivia Hodgson planted one of the trees, in memory of Sheila.

"This is for a lady who was almost 90 and died earlier this year," Mr Radford said.

"Her favourite colour was purple — so we put a purple ribbon on it."

Olivia affectionately named the tree planted in Sheila’s memory "Mango".

Mayor Jules Radich attended the planting and demonstrated to the crowd how to plant the native trees.

The mayor, in honour of Father’s Day, planted two trees.

"One for each of my children," he said.

The area will be used for Trees for Life to plant more native trees in the park for as long as they can fit them in.

Cr Mandy Mayhem said "this is the beginning".

"This is an enormous area where we can keep on planting and planting."
