England vs Ireland

England comfortably beat Ireland by 48 runs in the second men's ODI at Trent Bridge to go 1-0 up in the three-match series.

England impressed with the bat as opener Will Jacks made 94 and ODI debutant Sam Hain struck 89, but skipper Zak Crawley failed to make his mark as he fell for a two-ball duck as the hosts posted 334-8.

Set an imposing 335 for victory, Ireland struggled to build a threatening partnership and were left 80-3 after the powerplay having lost captain Paul Stirling for 25 and Curtis Campher for nine to England's fast-bowler Matthew Potts.

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed (4-54) led the emphatic bowling attack as Ireland slipped from 121-5 to 188-8 in the space of 12 overs.

But Ireland's last two wickets showed some resistance, including 55 from the last pair of Craig Young (40 not out) and Josh Little (29) before they were dismissed for 286.

Hain looked on course to reach a century but fell short after he was caught by Andy McBrine at mid-off, but his 89 was the third-highest score by an England player on ODI debut.

Only two players have made centuries on their England ODI debuts, Dennis Amiss in 1975 and Michael Lumb in 2014.

Jacks looked close to reaching his maiden ODI century as he attempted to launch a six but was caught at deep mid-wicket by Andy Balbirnie off the bowling of George Dockrell.

Ireland's spinner Dockrell (3-42) also removed Ben Duckett (48) before dismissing Jamie Smith (9).

George Scrimshaw endured a bizarre start to his England career, bowling several no-balls before taking his first wicket

Debutant George Scrimshaw (3-66) made a strange start to his international career after bowling six no-balls in his first two overs but was eventually redeemed when he picked up the opening wicket of Balbirnie (14) and the final wicket of Little too.

Umpire Rod Tucker rose his arm with alarming regularity as England seemed to be plagued with bowling extras, nine in total during their innings.

Ireland take the first wicket of the day as Phil Salt is caught at mid-off during the second ODI

Ireland started their chase well with opening pair Stirling and Balbirnie putting on 46 (30), however they were unable to recover after Potts and Ahmed skittled through their middle order.

Ireland's ninth-wicket pair Barry McCarthy 41 (38) and Young steadied the ship adding 43 (41) and helped their side to go past 200, however, fast-bowler Brydon Carse broke the partnership with a 89mph yorker that clattered the middle stump for the former.

Jacks completed an impressive catch running back at mid-off to dismiss Harry Tector 39 (40) while McBrine and Mark Adair fell victim to Ahmed's googlies.

Ireland's resistance at the end of the game helped them regain some control, needing 55 runs from 24 balls at the end of the 46th over but it was Scrimshaw who recovered well from a shaky start that was prized with the final wicket of Little, who was caught by Carse at the long-on fence.

Crawley: Scrimshaw bounced back well

England captain Zak Crawley:

"A good performance.

"There were a couple of standouts with the bat - Sam Hain on debut and Will Jacks - and I thought the spinners were brilliant with the ball as well.

"I thought we were above par with the bat. I thought anything above 300 would be a good score. They just batted really nicely."

[On Scrimshaw]: "I'm really impressed with how he bounced back. It was obviously a tough start for him but he showed a lot of character, bowled nicely and took three wickets.

"You've got to give people a chance. Not everyone gets off to a flier - I know that's been the case with my career - so I want to give people a chance."

'Scrimshaw will learn a lot from tough day'

Sky Sports' Lydia Greenway:

"The learning that he [Scrimshaw] will take from today is really important.

"You see it a lot with international players who are relatively young. They have a sharp trajectory into the international arena and only know success...

"For someone like Scrimshaw, he's had a tough day today. But the fact that he came back so quickly, the learning he'll be able to take away is a lot.

"That will be a positive in the long run."
