Moderate 4.1 magnitude earthquake rattles Wellington

Those around the capital have reported disrupted sleep after a moderate earthquake near Porirua late on Monday night.

The 4.1 magnitude quake struck 10 kilometres north-west of Porirua at 10:05pm, according to GeoNet.

Nearly 16,700 people reported feeling the 20-kilometre-deep quake.

Popular Wellington social media group Vic Deals was also flooded with an array of messages on how Kiwis experienced the earthquake, including several reporting sleep disruptions.

The initial jolt was followed by a smaller 2.7 magnitude quake at 10:55pm. It was 10 kilometres north-west of Porirua and 19 kilometres deep.

There's been no further activity overnight. 

However, off shore there were two decent shakes last night.

A 4.9 magnitude quake struck 145 km east of Hicks Bay in northern Tairāwhiti at 8:34pm on Monday at a depth of 10 kilometres.

It came after a magnitude 5 earthquake in the Kermadec Islands at 7:41pm. The jolt was just over 36 kilometres deep.
