Former Groves High School basketball standout Jerald Colonel has been recognized for his play on the basketball court during the 2023- 24 season.
Colonel was named to the Panhandle All-Conference First Team and the FCSAA Division I All-Tournament Team.
The 6-foot-8 forward helped Chipola Community College to a 29-5 record. Chipola won a share of the Panhandle Conference title for the previous three years but this year won the conference title outright.
During the season, Colonel played in 33 games and averaged 9.1 points and 6.2 rebounds a game. He shot 59.2 percent from the field and also had 46 blocks, 35 steals and 15 assists on the season.
As a freshman during the 2022-23 campaign, Colonel averaged 5.8 points and 5.2 rebounds a game while blocking 54 shots and shooting 66.7 percent from the field.
Colonel had a season high 18 points in a win over Gulf Coast State on February 7 and pulled down 12 rebounds in each of their wins over Tallahassee Community College on March 2 and March 15. He had eight blocks in a November 5 win over Southwest Mississippi Community College.
The Indians defeated Indian River State 83-80 in the NCCAA quarterfinals, defeated Tallahassee Community College 73-68 in the NJCAA South Atlantic District Semifinals and defeated Northwest Florida State 50-48 in the NJCAA South Atlantic District Finals before losing to Hutchinson Community College 78-71 in the second round of the NJCAA Tournament.
Colonel received an offer from Radford in the summer of 2023 and an offer from Northwestern State in the fall of 2023. He picked up an offer from Western Illinois on March 18, 2024.
