FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier: Colombia continues unbeaten run with win over Argentina

Colombia continued its unbeaten start to the CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign with a 2-1 win over Argentina in Baranquilla on Tuesday.

Argentina has a throw deep in opposition territory. Nothing comes off it though. Colombia counter and a super through ball sees them with another chance to score. An excellent goal line clearance from Alexis Mac Allister keeps the score at 2-1. 

And with that the referee blows the FT whistle! Los Cafeteros have their revenge for the Copa final defeat! Their unbeaten run in the FIFA WC Qualifiers continue!

Dybala cuts in from the right and takes a shot with his left foot. The ball is always rising though and misses the target by a huge margin.

Another change for the host. Mosquera is unable to continue and is being carried off the field. Juan Cabal is his replacement.

Martinez finds himself 1v1! A simple ball into his path from the right. He tries to switch the ball to his right foot and shoot but the combination of keeper and defender smothers the attempted shot.

Another attempted ball into the far post from the left flank. Mojica up to the task yet again. He heads it up in the air and the keeper comes and claims it.

Duran makes his way out for Colombia. He picks up a yellow on the way for delaying his exit. Cordoba takes his place.

More patient build up from Argentina. Ball falls to Lautaro after the ball in from Acuna is cleared. He makes room for a shot but it is deflected behind.

Lo Celso on the field for Argentina. De Paul makes way.

Glorious chance for Duran to double the lead. Doesn’t get the contact he wanted following a lay off from the left. Martinez catches it comfortably in front of his face.

Colombia recycling the ball better after taking the lead. The speed of the game has gone down several notches.

Alvarez misses the clinching pass after a quick counter left it 3v3 against the defence. Mac Allister puts another cross in but the referee stops play after a clash of heads.

Argentina looks to switch it up with a cross into the far post as Molina looked to make a late run. Mojica deals with the danger. 

Mac Allister and Acuna come in for Lisandro and Paredes.

Goal!! James scores the penalty to give Colombia the lead again! And what a penalty it was! Rifles it into the top right corner as the keeper dived the wrong way.

Munoz continues his complaints against the referee for what he is certain is a foul by Otamendi in the box. The referee makes his way away from the crowd of players and towards the monitor. Penalty given by VAR!!

Appeals for a penalty from Colombia after the attacker is brought down in the box. Nothing from the referee. Argentina counter at the other end but nothing comes off the action.

Romero getting some medical attention near the goal line for Argentina. He looks okay to continue but will have to step out before entering the field of play again.

48' Gonzalez equalises!

GOAL! Sloppy play in defence from Colombia. Gives the ball away in midfield and Nico outruns Mosquera and calmly slots it in between the keeper’s legs to make it 1-1.

Duran has his ankles clipped at the edge of the box by Lautaro. James goes for goal in the resultant freekick and misses by quite a distance. Zooms high over the bar.

Only the Alvarez chance to show for Argentina so far. The host has done well to use the pace down the wings to create chances after transitional moments.

Lisandro complaining about a shirt pull at the far post as Paredes put in a free kick from the left flank. Nothing from the referee though. Goal kick.

Another quick attempt at a counter for Colombia. James tries to find a charging Luis Diaz on the left flank. Good defending from Romero to prevent him from creating a chance on goal.

Mosquera gives Colombia the lead! A lofted ball in from the touchline, after a one-two following a corner, towards the far post and the defender makes no mistake in nodding it in. James bags the assist.

Colombia attempt a quick counter after a misplaced pass from Argentina in the final third. James is forced to slow the pace down and go wide to Munoz who wins a corner that amounts to nothing.

A long range attempt from Rios. Doesn’t get the required power on it and the ball rolls into the hands of Martinez.

Alvarez steals the ball off the keeper just outside the box. Tried to roll the ball into the empty net from a tight angle but misses. Vargas breathing a sigh of relief!

Argentina’s turn to conjure up an attack. Montiel crosses one in from the right flank, goes all the way to Nico on the left wing. His shot ricochets back into the box. Alvarez is judged to have fouled Vargas as he came out to punch the ball.

First chance of the night for Colombia. J. Arias tries to volley one from the edge of the box after the cross in from the right. The defence is upto the task.

Good pressure from the Colombia midfield. The Copa America champions haven’t been able to play out from the back. Huge boos ringing around whenever Dibu Martinez take a touch!

Colombia take control of possession after the early exchanges. James dropping quite deep in midfield in the early stages.
