Oscar winner Cillian Murphy is set to return to screens for the Peaky Blinders movie, with filming due to start in September.

Series creator Steven Knight said that the Cork actor would be returning for the follow-up film to Birmingham World at the premier for another series, The Town.

Speaking on the red carpet, Knight confirmed Murphy's return and also revealed that they would be shooting in England in September. "He definitely is returning for it. We're shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth,” he said.

During a conversation with Margot Robbie for Variety’s Actors on Actors series late last year, the Oppenheimer star spoke about the possibility of reprising his role for a Peaky Blinders movie.

After Robbie asked him if there was going to be a spinoff movie, Murphy said: “I mean, I’m open to the idea. I’ve always thought that if there’s more story to tell.”

Knight also praised Murphy for his recent win at the Academy Awards for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The Ballintemple native became the first Irish-born person to win best actor at the Oscars.

"It was so deserved. I mean he's brilliant, and he's such a great human being and he leads the line when we're shooting and he's so level-headed and straight-forward,” he told Birmingham World.

“He deserves everything he gets."

Murphy starred in the series as Tommy Shelby, the leader of the Birmingham-based gang, the Peaky Blinders.

The series — which originally aired on BBC before moving over to Netflix — is set in post-World War I England and is loosely based on a gang with the same name.
