Christchurch Airport is strengthening its position as a key driver of the South Island economy, with global logistics leader DHL Express committing to a NZD42 million state-of-the-art gateway facility at the airport’s Dakota Park freight precinct. This significant development, set to open in 2026, reflects growing confidence in the South Island’s economic future.

As the region’s largest freight hub, Christchurch Airport plays a critical role in enabling trade and connectivity for thousands of South Island businesses, from small enterprises to major exporters. Dakota Park, the airport’s 80-hectare freight precinct, already hosts several leading logistics and freight companies. DHL’s investment underscores the airport’s strategic importance in fostering economic growth and facilitating global market access.

Christchurch Airport CEO Justin Watson welcomed the news, stating:

“This significant commitment from DHL underscores the confidence in the South Island’s potential as a thriving economic hub. We are proud to offer a logistics ecosystem that enables businesses to connect with the world more efficiently, and this facility will develop that capability.”

The facility will integrate DHL’s service point and gateway into a single location, featuring advanced sorting technology and sustainable infrastructure. This aligns with Christchurch Airport’s dedication to environmentally responsible growth while enhancing airfreight capacity and operational efficiency.

DHL Express Managing Director, New Zealand & Pacific Islands, Mark Foy, highlighted the benefits, saying:

“The new DHL gateway will have direct access to the tarmac which enables us to significantly improve shipment processing speed and help more Kiwi exporters and importers get their products to international markets.”

This development supports Christchurch Airport’s 2040 Master Plan, which aims to maintain the South Island’s competitiveness and connectivity in the global economy.

By expanding its freight capabilities, Christchurch Airport is ensuring businesses across the region benefit from faster shipping times, greater international connectivity, and a strong foundation for future growth.
