Relief as Emiliano Grillo Wins First Title in Almost 8 Years
England's Harry Hall missed out on a first PGA Tour victory as Emiliano Grillo beat Adam Schenk in a play-off to win the Charles Schwab Challenge, with Emiliano Grillo his second PGA Tour title almost eight years after his first.
Emiliano Grillo’s 72nd hole at the Charles Schwab Challenge couldn't have gone much worse. His tee shot found a stream on the cart path, marked as a penalty area. The Argentinian could only watch on as his ball tricked back 50-plus yards.
He ultimately dropped on the cart path on the line where the ball entered the penalty area, leading to a double bogey, and from a comfortable position Grillo suddenly found himself on -8 after 4 rounds, and in a playoff with Adam Schenk.
Grillo’s tee shot on the second playoff hole, the par 3 16th, and with a major slice of luck, cleared a bunker by inches and kicked heavily left, funnelling down a slope and leaving a birdie attempt inside 5 feet. The Argentine converted to earn his second tour title.
The day could have finished very differently had England's Harry Hall held his nerve when it mattered.
Hall started the day well, posting back-to-back birdies on the first two holes, but four bogeys saw his lead evaporate with Grillo and Schenk hot on his heels.
The 25-year-old found himself in a three-way tie at the top with Grillo and Schenk as he teed off on the final hole.
As the Englishman attempted to claim his first PGA Tour title, he hit his tee shot into the water for bogey as he finished with a 73 to miss out on the play-off by a shot.
Hall finished tied for third in Texas with new world number one Scottie Scheffler, who carded a three-under 67 after making two birdies and a hole-in-one at the 189-yard eighth.
Adam Schenk is now 0-4 when holding the 54-hole lead/co-lead in 171 starts on Tour.
Scottie Scheffler joined Harris English with an ace on the eighth hole this week and posted his tour-leading 11th top-10 this season.
Harry Hall held 18-, 36- and 54-hole leads/co-leads before posting a career-best T3 result.
Dallas native Paul Haley II sat T96 after the opening round en-route to a fifth-place finish.
Defending champion Sam Burns finished T6 at 5-under
