The Toffees were looking to brighten what's become a challenging season after being docked 10 points in the Premier League for financial misdemeanours, but things looked bleak at Goodison Road at half-time with the home side trailing to a Michael Keane own goal.

A match lacking in quality was lit up, though, when Beto leapt up to score in the 82 minute after FUlham failed to clear its lines, setting up a frantic final few minutes.

Both sides had chances to win it in stoppage-time, Arnaut Danjuma sending a powerful volley just inches wide – although it may have been ruled out for offside – before several Fulham took shots at Jordan Pickford's goal without finding a way through.

The shootout remained level until at 4-3 Bobby De Cordova-Reid had his effort save by Pickford, but the Everton keeper was let down horribly when Amadou Onana produced a woefully weak effort next up which Berndt Leno easily dealt with.

With the scores level at 6-6, Idrissa Gueye stepped up and looked hurried as he sent his shot against the post, leaving Tosin Adarabioyo to win the tie with his successful kick and send the Cottagers into the last four for the first time in their history.
