MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Tuesday is “Girls Day at the Capitol,” a day to encourage young women to become involved in state government. State Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover) is partnering with Miss Alabama Teen Ali Mims to host the event.
Girls from around the state in 6th through 12th grades are invited to interact with and ask questions to female elected officials and tour the Alabama Capitol Building and Governor’s Mansion.
“Though Alabama currently enjoys its second female governor, a female U.S. senator, and 24 female members of the Alabama Legislature, our state still ranks 47th nationally with just 18% of lawmakers being women,” DuBose said. “Women bring a unique perspective and a different set of issues, initiatives, and priorities to public service, and it is important for us to encourage future generations of young women to become involved in government and let their voices be heard.”
More than 200 girls took part in the inaugural “Girls Day at the Capitol” event last year.
Participants will meet at the Alabama State House at 12:30 p.m. with the Capitol tour and session with female officeholders following at 1 p.m. The group will also tour the Christmas decorations at the Alabama Governor’s Mansion from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and participate in a refreshment reception before taking a group photo.
