In the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Scialfa shares for the first time that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in 2018, according to People. The film captures the band gearing up for their first tour since 2017, a process that has become more difficult for Scialfa due to her diagnosis.

“I’ve been with the band for 40 years, and it felt great to return to the stage,” she said. “But touring has become a challenge. In 2018, while Bruce and I were doing a Broadway show, I was diagnosed with early-stage multiple myeloma.”

Though her illness requires her to be more cautious, Scialfa still finds joy in performing and has embraced her “new normal.”

“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful about what I do and where I go,” she explained. “Sometimes I join for a few shows and sing a couple of songs, and that’s been a real treat. It’s my new normal, and I’m OK with that.”

Scialfa and Springsteen have been married for 33 years and have three children, sons Evan, 34, and Sam, 30, and daughter Jessica, 32.
