Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki set to quit Erebus Motorsport ...

Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki has reportedly split from Erebus Motorsport and may not race at all in the 2024 season.

The 26-year-old won his maiden title last year, coming up trumps in a showdown with departing great Shane van Gisbergen.

But his defence could be over before it even began.

Kostecki has already decided to leave Erebus just three weeks out from the Bathurst 500 season opener, as first revealed by Speedcafe.

In a sign of the fractious situation dating back to midway through last season, Kostecki is said to have left without having a new drive lined up with a rival Supercars team.

The news has sparked doubt over Kostecki’s Supercars career given his NASCAR backer Richard Childress, who has close ties to Erebus, has previously said he wanted to run the Australian in a handful of races in the US this season.

The Supercars grid is full for 2024, meaning any outfit interested in signing Kostecki full-time would need to axe a current driver or relegate them to co-driving duties.

Erebus, meanwhile, have been left scrambling after already receiving a shake-up for 2024 when fellow young star Will Brown left to join Triple Eight as van Gisbergen’s replacement.

Channel 7 commentator Jack Perkins, who left his role as an Erebus co-driver at the end of last year, said it is difficult to see how Kostecki gets back on the grid as early as the Bathurst opener.

“It’s a challenging one because all the teams are busy going through their pre-season photoshoots and media and what not as we speak,” Perkins told 7NEWS.com.au.

“It’s not as easy as just giving someone the flick. You’ve got to go and get race suits made and contracts drawn up and all that jazz, which most of those things all got signed off on at the start of December last year.

“Whatever happens from this point in, whether it’s something Brodie does or something the team does in terms of the replacement driver, you can only assume all parties are caught off guard and you look for the details in terms of photos and race suits for the first couple of races and that might help paint a picture of when all this went down.

“Clearly now for Brodie to get back on the grid it’s looking like that might be a challenging prospect. But anything can happen in sport and it usually does.”

Boost Mobile’s Peter Adderton said he would continue to sponsor and support Kostecki this year.

“This is a huge loss for Supercars and those supporting partners and most importantly the fans,” he wrote.

“It’s clear there are issues across the board from teams, to drivers. No Brodie, no SVG, what a huge loss.”

Adderton this week posted an image of a NASCAR with Kostecki’s name on it and declared he is “excited for 2024”.

Kostecki previously raced in the US as a teenager and has been keen to expand his NASCAR appearances after a cameo last year.

There has been no hint, however, that he would make a permanent move in the near future.

“I’m really fortunate because the last couple of years I’ve been teammates with Brodie and been able to see him apply his trade first-hand,” Perkins said.

“I have a massive respect for Brodie and I’m in awe of how he goes about his motor racing because he’s very talented and his very sound-mind in terms of engineering and the physics and philosophy of driving race cars, which can sometimes go beyond just turning the steering wheel.

“He’s undoubtedly a master in his trade and he’s probably in a better position than Shane van Gisbergen to chase the NASCAR dream because when he was 14 or 15 he was racing in the feeder series.

“Brodie’s still a young guy, he’s only 26 years old, he’s a Supercars champion and I’m sure there’s opportunities beyond not just Supercars but NASCAR for him. I hope he gets a chance to land on his feet and do what he wants to do.

“I don’t think Brodie’s chapter in Supercars is anywhere near finished.”

The championship-winning Erebus team will now enter the season with an entirely new line-up, albeit with Jack Le Brocq returning to the fold after nearly 10 years away.

Le Brocq could be joined at Erebus by former teammate Todd Hazelwood.

Hazelwood looked set for co-driving duties this year after losing his spot on the grid when Blanchard Racing Team signed Aaron Love and James Courtney for their first season as a two-car operation.

Perkins said title contenders Chaz Mostert and Cameron Waters would be “as disappointed as Brodie” that Kostecki’s championship hopes could be dashed.

“They want to be able to fly the Ford flag and prove that they’re as competitive as Brodie and their respective teams are good enough to take it to the champion team from last year,” he said.

The Supercars season gets underway live and free on Seven and 7plus with the Bathurst 500 on February 24-25.
